Meet Lisa Stewart M.Ed

Hi, I’m Lisa and I’m dyslexic. I tell you this for a few reasons, I hope it will afford me some grace when you find the inevitable misspellings, I hope it will help you to understand that I “get it” when it comes to struggling in school, and it is important for me to feel no shame in my identity as a dyslexic.

I am the mother of 3 children. My oldest is neurotypical, and currently doing medical research, although struggles with bouts of anxiety, my middle child has successfully battled and managed ADHD and is currently a sophmore in college, studying mechanical engineering, and my youngest has severe and profound dyslexia and ADHD and is beginning to navigate the waters of high school. He also has high-functioning autism, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, sensory processing disorder, anxiety and a few other things that make learning so very difficult.

All of my children are amazing people, that love each other, and care about the world around them. But, because of my youngest I have had to learn to navigate the world of SPED support. He has made me a better teacher, a better mother, and has given me a desire to help other that are trying to navigate the tightrope of IEP support as well.

I got my BS in education with a minor in history. I went on to get my M Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction focusing on behavioral science for students with special needs. When my son was diagnosed with dyslexia we were living overseas at the time and didn’t have access to proper reading instruction so I enrolled in a class to learn about Orton-Gillingham reading methods to teach my son how to read.

I have also completed advocacy training with the Council of Parents, Attorneys and Advocates (COPPA), Dyslexia Training Institute, Master IEP Coach®, and the Dyslexia Advocacy Advantage Training. I am currently partnering with a training center to teach advocacy to budding advocates.
