Ask them how their day went and what they did. We have this conversation at dinner everynight listing the best parts of our day and the most frustrating. This will help you know if anything is happening with them and if they are being bullied.

Provide positive reinforcement to your child. Sometimes the only positive accolades your child is going to get will be from you at home. But if your child is confident and positive, they are less likely to be a target of bullies.

Encourage your child to join sports teams or other after-school activities. This will allow them to meet new people and make new friends outside of school.

Work closely with teachers, therapists, school nurses, and counselors to ensure that your child has the support he needs at school.

If your child has been bullied in the past, try talking with them about it. Ask how they feel about what happened and what their feelings were at the time. Encourage them to talk about any feelings of anger or frustration that they had after the incident occurred.

Many parents are worried about not only the safety of their children but their mental and emotional health. Bullying can take many forms, such as physical violence, verbal abuse, intimidation or threats, and other actions that intimidate or intentionally hurt another person.

If your child is showing signs of being bullied, it’s important to talk to them about what they are experiencing. This will help open the lines of communication and help you determine if they are experiencing any other issues that might be causing them stress. Some signs that your child may be a victim of bullying include:

Isolation: Your child may refuse to go to school or seems to be depressed and withdrawn at school.

Physical injuries: Bruises on their arms or legs could be signs of bullying.

Unexplained injuries: If an accident does not explain your child’s injuries, it may indicate that someone is hurting them.

Loss of interest in activities: If your child has lost interest in activities they used to enjoy, such as sports or clubs, it could mean they are being bullied.

Changes in mood and personality: A sudden change in your child’s mood could mean that he/she has been bullied.

Excessive crying: crying for no reason or uncontrollably when triggered

Sudden decline in grades: If you notice a sharp decline in grades or your child seems to be struggling academically, there may be a reason beyond just poor performance.

Withdrawal from friends: Children who have been bullied often withdraw from their friends because they don’t want to talk about what happened or get help from others because they feel ashamed or guilty about what happened to them.

What do I do if my child is bullied?

Bullying is a problem in schools across the country. But, unfortunately, it can happen to any student, from any background, at any school.

If your child is being bullied, you first need to talk with them about it. Find out if they’re afraid of the bully or if someone else is doing the bullying for them. You can also find out if other kids are involved and whether or not they are being threatened by those kids as well.

Your next step is to talk to your child’s teacher and principal about what is going on with your child at school. Let them know what type of bullying they are experiencing so they can try to stop it immediately. They may also be able to provide some helpful tips on how you can help protect your child from this type of behavior in the future.

You may wonder why the school is not doing more to prevent it. Often the schools feel they have limited authority to take action against bullying. But with some collaboration, education, and parental involvement, they might be able to do more than they think. Don't take, "That isn't our responsibility" as an excuse.

The law requires schools to protect students from bullying and harassment. If your child is bullied at school, the school must take action if it knows or reasonably should know about the harassment or bullying, and it has the power to stop it. The school must also take immediate steps to investigate any reported incidents, even outside of school hours or off campus.

The National School Safety Center has a very helpful guide available on their website, which can be found here:----------------------------------

It’s important to educate yourself on the adverse effects of bullying on your child and how to prevent it from happening at school.

StopBullying.gov. Many students with this condition have experienced trauma, which often exacerbates their emotional and behavioral issues. That coupled with an education system that is unwilling to address or support their needs and we have a recipe for mistrust and failure in our kids. Trust can be a significant issue for these students, and forming a relationship with them that is built on empathy, trust, and mutual respect can often be the solution to many problem behaviors and can have a lasting impact on their emotional development.

According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a student may be eligible for special education services under the category of emotional disturbance if they exhibit one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree, which adversely affects educational performance:

An inability to learn which cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors

An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers

Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances exhibited in several situations

A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression

A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems

It is important to note that a student does not have to be diagnosed with a specific mental health condition to be eligible for special education services under the category of emotional disturbance. The federal and state special education eligibility criteria for emotional disturbance are the only criteria a student must meet to be eligible for special education services.

One line in the eligibility criteria that is often argued is, what is a “long period of time?” This was addressed by the Office of Special Education (OSEP), which stated it was a range of “two to nine months.”

“Marked degree” is also a sticking point. Yet OSEP states it refers to the frequency, duration, or intensity compared to peers.

Educators and parents need to understand that Emotional Disturbance is not a diagnosis but rather a label for a collection of behaviors and symptoms. Working with mental health professionals to get a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis for a student with suspected Emotional Disturbance is helpful. A diagnosis can help educators and parents better understand the underlying causes of the student’s emotional and behavioral issues and develop appropriate strategies and accommodations to support them.

If you believe your child may be eligible for special education services under the category of emotional disturbance, request a full comprehensive educational evaluation. Make sure to state your concerns and examples of the behavior you are seeing.

This may include a private journal for the student to reflect on their day’s events rather than a public behavior chart, which can be embarrassing and counterproductive for students with Emotional Disturbance. Classroom rules should be developed with buy-in from the student. They should be focused on establishing expectations and structure rather than punishment.

Accommodations for students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) are crucial to help them succeed in the classroom. Therefore, it is important to collect data on what accommodations are suitable for each student, as it is often trial and error to determine the most effective strategies for each student. Here are some accommodations that have proven to be effective for students with EBD:

Encourage positive behaviors: Provide students with a positive and structured environment by discouraging negative behavior while rewarding appropriate behavior. This can be achieved by setting clear rules and expectations, providing positive reinforcement when students display good behavior, and using a token economy system to reward positive behaviors. Provide students with a positive and structured environment by discouraging negative behavior while rewarding appropriate behavior. This can be achieved by setting clear rules and expectations, providing positive reinforcement when students display good behavior, and using a token economy system to reward positive behaviors.

Participating in class: Encourage students with EBD to participate by urging them to answer questions, offer their opinions, work with their peers, and complete assignments. Easy accommodations and modifications that can be made include: providing clear instructions, breaking down tasks into smaller steps, offering choices when able, and giving students extra time to complete assignments .

Provide proper assignments: Give students with EBD assignments that are within their abilities and that match their educational level. Accommodations that may be helpful for these students include allowing them to take breaks as needed, giving them more time to complete tasks, and helping them prepare for tests and assignments.

Parents should work with teachers, counselors, or psychologists: If you are having difficulty managing a student with EBD, or you believe a teacher is struggling with your child, don’t hesitate to ask for help from your school administration. There are many resources available to help educators support students with EBD. If a student’s emotional or behavioral problems are causing intense difficulty in the classroom, it may be necessary to seek help from a counselor or school psychologist.

Ensure accountability: It’s important for students with EBD to be held accountable for their behavior and actions. Accommodations that may be helpful for these students include frequent check-ins with the teacher, preferential seating arrangements, and alternative seating such as wiggle cushions or exercise ball seating.

By understanding the condition and implementing appropriate accommodations, it is possible to create a learning environment that meets the student’s needs .

In conclusion, emotional disturbance can significantly impact a student’s ability to succeed in school. Educators and parents need to understand the characteristics of this condition and the legal requirements and protections in place to support students with emotional disturbance.

Accommodations such as providing a positive and structured environment, encouraging class participation, providing proper assignments, working with IEP team members, counselors, or psychologists, and ensuring accountability can help support students with emotional disturbance. However, it is paramount to remember that each student is unique and may require different accommodations to support their individual needs.

By working together with mental health professionals, educators and parents can create a safe and supportive learning environment that promotes academic success and emotional well-being for all students, including those with emotional disturbance. With the appropriate support and accommodations, students with emotional disturbance can thrive in the classroom and beyond.

This Post resonatated with me - I need to talk to Lisa to find out how to help my kid

Suppose you notice signs that an FBA may be necessary. In that case, take action! Provide a written request to your child's school requesting an FBA be conducted and that you meet to consider a Behaviour Intervention Plan to address the behavior and ensure your child can succeed in their learning environment. Make sure to include in your written request permission to assess so and follow up with the school within a few days so that any timeline they are held to by state law begins ticking. By conducting an FBA and developing a behavior intervention plan, you can create a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.

About Lisa

My interest in behavior has driven my career. In this blog post, I'll share the red flags of an FBA that is not done correctly, how to spot if the school had not done due diligence while also discussing the importance of having a qualified person taking data, preferably a BCBA, it should include ABC data and data taken in different times of day, locations, with different people.

An FBA is a process that is often used to help identify the underlying causes of a child's challenging behavior. By examining the behaviors themselves (the "B"), the events or situations that trigger the behaviors (the "A"), and the consequences that follow the behaviors (the "C"), a team can use data to identify patterns and develop effective interventions. An FBA may be conducted by a team of school specialists or whenever possible in should be conducted by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). When done correctly, the information gathered can be incredibly helpful in developing effective interventions for a child.

Here are some red flags that the FBA may not have been done as thoroughly or comprehensively as it should have been:

Lack of data

One of the most common issues with FBAs is that data is not collected from a variety of sources, such as different times of day, locations, and with different people. When data is only taken in one or two situations, it may not present a complete picture of the child's behavior.

Incomplete data

Data that only focuses on what triggers the behavior or what happens immediately following the behavior is not enough. A good FBA should also include information about what happens leading up to the behavior, what the behavior itself looks like, and what happens after the behavior occurs. This is often referred to as ABC data.

Lack of specificity

A good FBA should be specific to the child's behavior and should not rely on generalizations or assumptions. For example, an FBA that identifies "attention-seeking behavior" as the main issue may not provide enough information to develop effective interventions.

Lack of expertise

In order for an FBA to be done correctly, it's important that the person(s) collecting and analyzing the data have the necessary expertise. Ideally, this would be a BCBA or someone else who has specific training and experience in behavior analysis. When data is collected by someone without this expertise, it may not be as accurate or useful.

If you suspect that your child's FBA may not have been done correctly, there are a few things you can do. First, make sure you have a copy of the FBA report and go through it carefully. Look for the red flags mentioned above, as well as any other issues that concern you. If you have questions or concerns, bring them up with your child's school team and/or the evaluator who conducted the FBA.

As a parent, it's important to advocate for your child and ask for an FBA if you feel it is necessary. You may also want to consider seeking an outside evaluation if you don't feel comfortable with the FBA conducted by the school.

In conclusion, an FBA can be an incredibly helpful tool in identifying and addressing a child's challenging behavior at school. However, it's important to make sure that the FBA is done correctly, with a focus on collecting comprehensive and specific data from a variety of sources by a qualified individual. If you have any concerns about your child's FBA, reach out to a behavior specialist.

If you are looking to add an advocate to your team, please reach out to me. I earned my Masters in Education in Behavior Science. I can help you navigate the system and help put supports in place for your child at school to encourage them to be their best self and find success at school.
