Think of PLAAFP as a detailed snapshot of exactly where your child is right now: their strengths, challenges, and everything in between. It's not about where they were last year or where you hope they'll be next year. It's about today, this moment, and what your child can and cannot do.
Why PLAAFP Is the Foundation of Everything
Here's something that might surprise you: every single goal in your child's IEP should stem directly from their PLAAFP. If the PLAAFP says your child struggles with reading comprehension, there should be a goal addressing that. If it mentions difficulty with social interactions, that needs a goal too.
The PLAAFP serves several critical purposes:

  • Establishes the baseline for measuring your child's progress
  • Identifies specific areas where your child needs support
  • Explains how your child's disability impacts their ability to participate in general education
  • Justifies the special education services your child receives
  • Creates the roadmap for IEP goals and objectives

Without a solid, accurate PLAAFP, your child's entire IEP becomes shaky ground. It's like trying to build a house without a proper foundation: everything else depends on getting this part right.

What Should Be Included in Your Child's PLAAFP

A comprehensive PLAAFP isn't just about academics, though that's certainly part of it. It should paint a complete picture of your child across multiple areas:

This covers the traditional school subjects: reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. But it goes deeper than just grade levels. A good PLAAFP will explain not just that your child reads at a second-grade level, but how they read. Do they struggle with decoding? Comprehension? Fluency?

These are the practical life skills that help your child function independently. Depending on your child's age and needs, this might include dressing, eating, personal hygiene, or managing money.

How does your child interact with peers and adults? Can they regulate their emotions? Do they understand social cues? These skills are crucial for success both in school and in life.

This isn't just about whether your child can speak. It includes receptive language (understanding what others say), expressive language (communicating their thoughts), and pragmatic language (using language appropriately in social situations).

Does your child have difficulty sitting still? Following directions? Managing transitions? These behavioral aspects significantly impact learning and should be thoroughly documented.

Any physical limitations, sensory processing issues, or motor skill challenges should be clearly described and measured.

How to Read and Understand Your Child's PLAAFP

When you review your child's PLAAFP, you're looking for specific, measurable statements backed by data. Vague descriptions like "Johnny struggles with reading" aren't helpful. Instead, you want to see something like: "Based on recent assessments, Johnny reads 45 words per minute with 85% accuracy at the second-grade level, compared to the typical third-grade rate of 70-80 words per minute with 95% accuracy."

Look for These Key Elements

Objective Data: Good PLAAFPs include specific numbers, percentages, and concrete examples. This might come from standardized tests, classroom assessments, or behavioral data collection.

Current Performance: Everything should reflect how your child is performing now, not six months ago. If the IEP meeting is in October, the data should be recent, not from the previous spring.

Strengths and Needs: A balanced PLAAFP highlights what your child does well alongside areas of concern. This isn't about being positive for the sake of it: strengths can be built upon to address challenges.

  • What specific assessments were used?
  • How does this compare to typical peers?
  • What are my child's greatest strengths?
  • Which areas need the most support?

Inclusive education is more than just a buzzword; it's a commitment to providing every child with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive in their least restrictive environment.

    What is Inclusive Education?

    Inclusive education means that all children, when possible, regardless of their physical, intellectual, social, or emotional abilities, learn together in the same classrooms. It's about breaking down barriers and allow for the most successful opportunity for growth.

    Why Inclusive Education Matters

    • Equal Opportunities: Every child has the right to education. Inclusive education ensures that children with special needs have the same access to learning as their peers.
    • Social Integration: Being in an inclusive environment helps children with special needs develop social skills and build friendships with peers. This integration is essential for their emotional and social development.
    • Building Confidence: When children with special needs are included in mainstream classrooms, it sends a powerful message—they belong. This boosts their self-esteem and confidence.

This knowledge empowers you to advocate effectively for your child's needs. – No really, look up your district policies, print it out and take it to the next IEP meeting. It is powerful to use the words of the district supporting your child when in the meeting.
    • IEP placement: When talking about placement in the IEP meetings, be specific. What will the day look like? How much time will your child spend in the special education room, and how much time will be spent in the genearl education classroom?
    • Encourage Peer Interaction: Advocate for opportunities where your child can interact with their peers, both in and out of the classroom. This might include group projects, extracurricular activities, or playdates.
    • Stay Involved: Attend school meetings, volunteer in the classroom, and stay informed about your child's progress. Your involvement shows that you are committed to their education and well-being.

    Questions to ask:

    When deciding on the placement for your child ask a few questions:

    • Can my child be included in less demanding tasks in the classroom? - story time? Morning meeting? Art? PE? Music? Library? Math Minutes? Computer/robotics? Recess? Lunch?
    • Could my child be successful in the general education classroom if they were properly supported by staff? NOTE: It is not important if the school has the staff to answer this question, the question is COULD THEY?
    • Would being in a general education classroom provide positive role models to my child that they would benefit from even if the academics are a struggle?

    Inclusive education is an ongoing journey. As we move forward, it’s crucial to continue advocating for better resources, training, and policies that support all children. I tell you this for a few reasons, I hope it will afford me some grace when you find the inevitable misspellings, I hope it will help you to understand that I “get it” when it comes to struggling in school, and it is important for me to feel no shame in my identity as a dyslexic.

    Introduction to Inclusive Classrooms:

    Education is a mosaic of experiences, and when it comes to creating an inclusive classroom, the journey becomes even more complex. At the heart of this educational approach lies the understanding that each student possesses a unique set of abilities and challenges.

    Inclusivity is not just about being IN the classroom; it's about contributing to and feeling like a part of the learning community. But what happens when behavioral issues arise? How can parents help educators ensure that all students remain engaged and learning is not disrupted?

    Proactive Behavior Strategies:

    Including proactivity in the Behavior Intervention Plan or IEP is key in preempting behavioral disruptions. Educators can employ a variety of strategies to minimize distractions and foster an environment conducive to learning for all students.

    By understanding and anticipating the diverse needs of students, parents and educators can tailor interventions and strategies to individual circumstances. Starting with our routine for getting ready in the morning to create individualized support plans or adjusting the physical layout of the classroom to reduce triggers for certain behaviors.

    Empathy in Action: Connecting with Students

    I have said it before and I will say it again, connection is the cornerstone of a supportive environment. When adults approach our kids' unexpected behaviors with understanding and compassion, they create a protective barrier, providing a place for better communication and problem-solving.

    Empathetic communication involves actively listening to students, validating their feelings, and working collaboratively toward solutions. It's about seeing the world through their eyes and responding with kindness, which can often de-escalate tense situations and lead to more constructive outcomes.

    I don't know about you but when I'm dysregulated, I just want to feel heard and understood. Our kids are generally no different, even if they need time to cool off before they can express those emotions.

    Collaborative Efforts for Inclusive Success

    The journey towards an inclusive classroom should not be thrust on the teacher alone. It calls for a myriad of players from educators, parents, students and specialists working in harmony.

    Fostering a collaborative environment includes regular communication, shared decision-making, and a commitment to the student's best interest. When all parties are aligned, the educational experience becomes richer and more effective for every learner.

    Often times parents feel like they are a thorn in the teachers' side. Sending emails and asking for "favors." If you approach each interaction with kindness and support most teachers will welcome help in doing their job.

    When you communicate with teachers your child jumps to the forefront of their mind. They are more likely to remember accommodations, services, and even offer help that is not listed in the IEP.

    Working with teachers will make everyone's year better. They will know they can reach out to you for help at home, blunt conversations with your child, and even classroom volunteering.

    Parents gain a team member and if you build a relationship, they might offer insights on how to support your child better at home.
    And students gain a team that all speaks the same language, they are held accountable for their responsibilities and they gain a sense of continuity, knowing that they can depend on the members of the team to be there, on the same page to support them.

    Special Education is a Team Effort

    I firmly believe that open and ongoing communication between teachers and parents is essential for the success of students with disabilities. Just this week a parent reached out to me explaining that the school is not requiring all of the communication with any member of school staff must first be sent through the Assistant Principal. And now, the AP is complaining that she is getting too much communication from this parent and is threatening to "shut it down."

    ​Unfortunately, some schools are restricting communication channels and funneling all interactions through one person, often the case manager. This practice raises concerns among parents and begs the question: Can they do that? Can parents request two-way communication as an accommodation in their child's Individualized Education Program (IEP)? The answer is yes, it is, and it should be. In this post, we explore the regulations in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) that support the need for effective communication in IEPs.

    Understanding the Legal Framework

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) does not explicitly require ongoing communication between teachers and parents. Probably because when it was passed in 1975 congress could not imagine a school trying to limit communication with a parent. However, IDEA guarantees parents and their children with disabilities various legal rights, known as "Procedural Safeguards." These safeguards emphasize the importance of parental participation, highlighting parents' role as mandatory members of the IEP Team. While IDEA focuses on parental participation in the development of the IEP, it does not specifically address daily, ongoing communication with the school.

    Enter ESSA:

    In 2017, Congress passed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), amending the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). ESSA emphasizes the need for parents to participate in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities. It recognizes parents as integral partners in their children's education and encourages their active involvement. You can find 20 US Code Section 6318 - Parent and Family Engagment, here.

    Making Two-Way Ongoing Communication a Part of the IEP:

    Since Congress deemed effective communication so important that it was enshrined in ESSA, it is crucial for parents to advocate for this accommodation to be included in their child's IEP. By referencing the law and presenting their case during the IEP meeting, parents can firmly assert their right to ongoing dialogue with teachers. However, it's important to exercise this right responsibly, being mindful of teachers' time and workload. Reasonable, respectful communication ensures a productive and efficient partnership between parents and teachers.

    Conclusion:

    Promoting effective communication between teachers and parents is not only common sense but also a legal obligation outlined in ESSA. I encourage parents to be proactive in asserting their rights to ongoing communication as an accommodation in their child's IEP. By working together, parents and teachers can create an inclusive educational environment that supports the unique needs of students with disabilities. Remember, it is not just common sense anymore, it is the law.

    As a special education advocate, I have worked with many families who are navigating the complex world of special education. One of the most critical components of a student's individualized education program (IEP) is related services. These services can be essential in supporting the unique needs of students with disabilities, so I want to take a moment to discuss this vital aspect of special education.

    Not long ago, I was working with a family who had a child with ADHD. This student struggled with sensory integration, which made it difficult for them to focus in the classroom environment. The family had been fighting for years to get the school to provide occupational therapy, which they believed would help their child learn to manage their sensory needs. However, the school had denied their request repeatedly, stating that the student did not need occupational therapy. It wasn't until the parents reached out to me for help that we were able to get the school to implement occupational therapy as a related service on the student's IEP. With the additional support, the student was finally able to better manage their sensory needs and find accommodations that would work for them. It also provided support for the teacher in learning to support the student's processing; and once those needs were met the academic progress was amazing.

    This story highlights the critical role that related services can play in a student's education. Related services refer to a range of support services that a student with disabilities may receive in order to achieve their individualized educational goals. These services are provided by trained professionals and aim to mitigate the impact of the student's disability on their learning.

    Examples of related services in special education include but are not limited to:

    • Speech therapy: This service may be provided to students who struggle with articulation, communication, or language expression.
    • Occupational therapy: This service aims to help students develop skills for daily living, such as self-care, fine motor skills, or sensory processing.
    • Physical therapy: Students who have mobility issues or physical impairments may receive physical therapy to help them improve their strength, balance, or coordination.
    • Counseling services: Some students may need mental health counseling to address social, emotional, or behavioral challenges that may interfere with their academic progress.
    • Assistive technology: Students with disabilities may receive assistive technology, such as specialized software or devices, to help them access the curriculum.

    It's important for parents to understand that related services are not optional in special education. These services are legally mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and must be included in an IEP if the student requires them to receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE).

    As an advocate, I often see schools resist providing appropriate related services to students, which can make it challenging for parents to ensure their child is receiving the support they need. Parents should know that they have the right to request related services as part of their child's IEP and that the school must provide them if they are necessary for the child's FAPE.

    In conclusion, related services are a critical component of special education. These services can help students with disabilities succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. As a parent, it's essential to advocate for your child's needs and push for the inclusion of related services on their IEP. Remember, every child with a disability has the right to access these services, and it's the school's responsibility to provide them.
