I’ve been there. The mere thought of packing a suitcase, navigating a crowded airport, or sitting in a car for six hours makes your heart race. When you have a child with sensory processing needs, ADHD, or autism, "vacation" often feels like just another word for "parenting in a place with fewer resources and more triggers."

For years, I stayed home. I was afraid of the meltdowns, the "picky" eating struggles in unfamiliar restaurants, and the sheer exhaustion of managing sensory overload in a world that isn't built for our kids. But here’s what I’ve learned: Travel with sensory kids is not only possible, it can be wonderful.

It won’t look like a glossy travel brochure. It might involve noise-canceling headphones, a suitcase full of familiar snacks, and a much slower pace. But the memories? They are worth every bit of extra planning.

Inspired by some of the best advice from the neurodivergent community, here are my eight tips for successful, sensory-friendly family travel.

You don’t have to start with a cross-country flight to Disney. In fact, please don’t! Just like we scaffold learning in an IEP, we need to scaffold travel.

Start with a "staycation" or a local day trip. Visit a nearby museum, take a short train ride, or spend one night at a hotel thirty minutes away. This helps you identify triggers: does the hotel air conditioner hum too loudly? Does the car seat get too hot?: without the high stakes of a thousand-dollar vacation.

Our kids often feel like life is something that happens to them rather than something they are a part of. To get buy-in, involve them in the planning.

Give them two or three "parent-approved" options for a destination or an activity. "Would you rather go to the park with the big splash pad or the museum with the dinosaur bones?" When they choose, they have skin in the game. They aren't being dragged along; they are on their vacation.

For a child with sensory concerns, the unknown is a threat. Use visual schedules and social stories to walk them through the day.

  • Photos are your friends: Show them pictures of the hotel room, the airplane cabin, or the beach.
  • The Schedule: Create a simple visual timeline. "First, we wait in line. Then, we sit on the plane. Then, we get a snack."
  • The "Why": Explain why things happen (like security checks) so they don't feel like they're losing control.

This is your survival bag. It should be within arm's reach at all times: not buried in the trunk or an overhead bin.

Your kit might include:

  • Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs.
  • Familiar textures: A favorite soft blanket or a weighted lap pad.
  • Fidgets: Anything that keeps hands busy and brains regulated.
  • Chewies: For those who need oral input to stay calm.
  • Sunglasses and hats: To block out harsh terminal lights or the bright sun.

The biggest mistake we make is trying to "do it all." If you try to hit three monuments, two museums, and a fancy dinner in one day, someone will melt down (and it might be you!).

Follow the One Big Thing Rule: Plan one main activity per day. Spend the rest of the time at the hotel pool, a quiet park, or just decompressing with a movie. Regulation is more important than sightseeing.

Unfamiliar food and scratchy hotel sheets can derail a trip fast.

  • Bring the "Safe" Foods: Pack a supply of the snacks and meals you know they’ll eat.
  • Kitchenettes are Key: Whenever possible, book a room with a fridge and microwave.
  • The "Home" Smell: Bring their pillowcase from home or use the same laundry detergent for their travel clothes. Those small sensory anchors tell their nervous system, "You're safe."

Keep those hands busy! Boredom often leads to sensory seeking (which can look like kicking the seat in front of them).

  • Travel Trays: A flat surface for LEGOs, coloring, or playdough.
  • New-to-Them Toys: Wrap a few small, cheap toys from the dollar store. The novelty of unwrapping them can buy you 20 minutes of peace.
  • Audiobooks: A great way to engage the brain without the eye strain of a screen during a long car ride.

Things will go wrong. There will be a missed flight, a spilled juice box, or a sensory overload in the middle of a theme park. It’s okay.

When it happens, take a breath. Remind yourself that your child isn't giving you a hard time; they are having a hard time. If you have to leave an event early or skip a "must-see" spot to keep everyone regulated, you haven't failed. You're being the advocate your child needs.

Traveling with neurodivergent kids requires a different kind of "itinerary," one built on patience, preparation, and a whole lot of snacks. But seeing your child experience the world: on their own terms: is a victory worth celebrating.

The National Arboretum

I visited the Arboretum for the first time this month. It was full a wonderful day full of calm, open space, and plenty of room to run.

If you love nature and plants, you will enjoy visiting the National Arboretum, a 446-acre botanical garden that showcases a variety of trees, flowers, shrubs, and herbs from around the world. You can walk, bike, or drive through the scenic trails and gardens, and admire the stunning displays of seasonal colors and blooms. Kids will love the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum, where they can see miniature trees and landscapes that are hundreds of years old, and the National Capitol Columns, where they can climb and pose with the original columns of the US Capitol building. The National Arboretum is free and open to the public every day except Christmas.

Best of all it is free entry and free parking.

The Spy Museum

Fascinated by the world of espionage and secret agents? You will love the Spy Museum! A museum that reveals the history, techniques, and gadgets of spying and intelligence. You can see authentic artifacts and exhibits from the Cold War, the World Wars, and the modern era, and learn about the stories and missions of famous spies and spy catchers. Kids will love the interactive exhibits and activities, where they can test their skills and learn how to be a spy. They can also participate in a spy adventure, where they can assume a cover identity and go on a mission to crack codes, evade surveillance, and uncover secrets. The Spy Museum is open every day and requires a timed-entry ticket that can be purchased online or at the door.

The US Mint

I know this one might sound boring, but I have to tell you how engaged my entire family from my 6 year old son to my 60 year old mother was at the mint. If you are curious about how money is made and what it means, you will enjoy visiting the US Mint, a facility that produces coins and medals for the US and other countries. You can take a self-guided tour of the production floor, where you can see the machines and processes that turn metal blanks into shiny coins. You can also see exhibits and displays that explain the history, design, and symbolism of the US currency and coinage. Kids will love the interactive games and activities, where they can learn about the value and features of money, and design their own coins and medals. The US Mint is free and open to the public on weekdays, except federal holidays, and requires a reservation that can be made online or by phone.

Smithsonian Museums

You can't come to DC without a stop at the Smithsonian Museums, where you can see exhibits and collections on art, history, science, culture, and more.

Some of the most popular museums for kids are the National Air and Space Museum, where they can see planes, rockets, and satellites. The update to this museum has made it very kid friendly and the hands-on activities are "Out of the World."

Don't forget to check out the Dulles Air and Space Museum too. That is where the BIG planes and Shuttle is.

National Museum of Natural History you could get lost in there for hours. If you love dinosaurs, fossils, and animals it is the place to be. But you can also see the Hope Diamond and meteorites! Again, the hands-on learning makes this stop very memorable.

The National Museum of American History, could be hit or miss for some families. But, if you decide it might be a miss, at the very least enter the front doors and walk through the Star-Spangled Banner exhibit. It is on the first floor the first thing you do, and totally worth the stop. I am not a fan of fashion or first ladies for that matter, but I also found the First Ladies' gowns to be facinating. Lastly, you will find the Ruby Slippers, Kermit, the MASH signpost, R2D2 and C3PO there if you go looking.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture, where you can see exhibits and artifacts on the history and culture of African Americans, such as slavery, civil rights, music, and sports. You can also explore the interactive and immersive galleries, and learn about the stories and contributions of African Americans to the nation and the world.

The MALL

The National Mall, where you can see the iconic monuments and memorials, such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the newly revamped Korean War Memorial. You can also visit the Capitol Building, where you can see the seat of the US Congress and learn about the legislative branch of the government; the White House, where you can see the residence and office of the US President and learn about the executive branch of the government; and the Library of Congress, where you can see the largest library in the world and learn about the cultural and intellectual heritage of the nation.

I recommend if you are coming to see the Capitol to email your Representative or Senator and ask for a personal tour. This tour given by their office is personalized to you and your family's interests and it lets you see some of the cool behind the scenes places.

The National Zoo

The National Zoo, where you can see over 2,000 animals, including lions, elephants, and gorillas. My husband's favorites are the red pandas, and we are hoping China will share their Giant Pandas with us again soon. You can also watch animal feeding and enrichment sessions, and learn about conservation and wildlife protection.

If you didn't know, I was a teacher. I have taught many grades in many different states. I love teaching, I love shaping lives, and I love making each kid feel like they belong, even though they are unique.

But feeling like you belong is a trick for many kids, and when sensory issues are at play, they can feel even more isolated from the group. Here are some tips you can do to help your kids find a space and a way to self-regulate when their classroom party becomes a bit much.

  • Talk to the teacher or the Room Mom planning the party. If sound, light, or commotion is a trigger, suggest party ideas that minimize those triggers.
  • Suggest heavy work activities or something outside to break up the noise and sensory overload.
  • Ask if you could collaborate with another class and have one room, a noisier room, and one room, the quieter activity room.
  • Ask the teacher to create a quiet zone, a place to escape the "fun" and decompress before jumping back in. (If the classroom is not an option, maybe a desk in the hall or a space in another classroom)
  • Ask for a schedule of events and walk through them with your child so they know what to expect.
  • Ask the teacher if your child can be paired with a friend or buddy; someone that will feel like a constant while participating in the activity.
  • Let your child opt out of the activity(s). If it is just too much, ask if there is a place he could do something else, with someone else if they are experiencing the same overload.
  • Let your child take a fidget to school to help keep his mind calm while participating.
  • Arrange for lap weights. These can be very calming and can provide a bit of a distraction if it is new.
  • Arrange for a walk if things get too overwhelming.
  • Ask your child if they would like earplugs or noise-canceling headphones. -- I had a student that just used cotton.
  • Teach your child to belly breathe. This video is for littles, but the idea works for everyone. Five deep breaths and our mind can be clearer for decision making.

Most students love a good class party, but that excitement can aggravate the students with sensory needs. As a teacher, I tried hard to accommodate sensory sensitive students, even in non-party times. Although I do not love a noisy classroom, I know that that noise often means they are LEARNING. But, some students simply don't do well in that collaborative commotion. So, I paired with another nearby teacher to have a desk in the back of her room so when a child needed a break, there was a safe place to go, and I did the same for her.

Most teachers are willing to meet your child's needs, but with 25 other kids to think about, it is hard to ensure each need is met. It is up to you and your child to advocate for those specific needs. If you have a plan, especially a "party plan," I can't imagine a teacher not willing to make sensory accommodations for your child. Give it a try, see if it makes party day a little more exciting for your sensitive guy or gal.
